In 2022, I had the privilege of serving as Director of Photography for HBO's behind-the-scenes interview featuring 'Rap Sh!t' creator Issa Rae alongside Kid Fury and Nina Gloster Burrell in conversation with stars Aida Osman and KaMillion. This project showcased my technical expertise while capturing the creative vision behind this groundbreaking series.

Cutting-Edge Equipment Selection

For this high-profile HBO Max production, I implemented a sophisticated five-camera setup that allowed for dynamic and immersive storytelling. Here’s a detailed breakdown of my equipment choices and technical setup:

Camera Package

I utilized the RED V Raptor, which was brand new at the time, alongside RED Komodo cameras. The RED V Raptor's exceptional resolution and dynamic range made it a perfect fit for capturing intricate details in our interviews. With the Raptor's 8K capabilities, every frame was rich with detail, providing a visually stunning backdrop to the conversations.

Lens Selection

After thorough testing, I selected Angenieux cinema lenses for their superior optical characteristics. These lenses provided smooth focus transitions and exceptional clarity, perfectly matching the RED camera systems. The combination allowed for significant depth of field control, enhancing the emotional depth of the scenes captured.

Each position was strategically chosen to highlight different perspectives, ensuring the audience felt fully immersed in the dialogues unfolding on screen.

Working with Issa Rae and the Creative Team

Working with Issa Rae was a highlight of this production. What stood out most was:

  • Her Impeccable Presentation: Issa's on-camera presence is magnetic. Each conversation felt natural, and she effortlessly engaged with both her guests and the audience.

  • Exceptional Team: The creative team surrounding her added immense value to the project. Their collaborative spirit ensured that everyone was aligned with the show's vision, which was incredibly inspiring.

  • Commitment to Inclusivity: Issa demonstrated remarkable leadership in promoting diversity both in front of and behind the camera. Her dedication to creating an inclusive environment allowed for a rich exchange of ideas, representing various cultural perspectives.

Creative Vision and Technical Execution

The behind-the-scenes interview explored the various creative influences behind 'Rap Sh!t,' giving viewers exclusive insight into the show's development. My approach focused on:

  • Creating an Intimate Visual Atmosphere: I aimed to highlight the genuine connections between creators and cast. The use of tighter shot compositions and soft lighting helped to create an inviting atmosphere, allowing the audience to feel connected to the conversation.

  • Utilizing RED V Raptor's Exceptional 8K Capabilities: The unparalleled image quality facilitated in pushing the boundaries of what we could present visually. The ability to capture every subtle expression made a significant impact in conveying the truth behind their discussions.

  • Ensuring Consistent Visual Quality Across All Five Camera Angles: Maintaining a cohesive look throughout all five cameras required meticulous attention to detail in lighting and color grading. This consistency kept the audience anchored in the story without any distracting visual discrepancies.

From Set to Screen: The Max Streaming Experience

This behind-the-scenes content was created specifically for Max (formerly HBO Max), Warner Bros. Discovery's premium streaming platform. The interview provides fans with exclusive access to the creative minds behind the show, including insights from Issa Rae's vision for the series. It serves as an essential bridge between HBO's proud legacy and the new stories being shared in the streaming age.

This production not only provided insights into 'Rap Sh!t' but also offered a glimpse into the future of media storytelling, where authenticity, representation, and innovative techniques harmoniously coexist.

My Journey in Cinematography

This project represents another milestone in my extensive career, which includes work as Director of Photography on HBO's Lizzo documentary, NBC's 'The Horsemen' TV pilot, and award-winning films like 'The Cove' (which won an Oscar for Best Documentary). My experience spans from my early days at NBC 9 News to working as Michael Jordan's personal cinematographer and winning Best Cinematography for 'FLATTERS' at the Los Angeles Cinematography Awards.

Having had the chance to work with diverse talent in the industry, I am continuously inspired by the evolving landscape of storytelling. Each project presents its own unique challenges, and I relish in finding creative solutions that push the envelope of visual narrative.

Throughout my career, I've embraced new technologies and techniques, including using the latest in camera systems. My skill set continues to expand as I invest in ongoing learning and exploration of modern cinematography practices.

In summary, capture art through a lens is not just about the mechanics—it's about telling stories that resonate deeply with audiences. As I look back on the experience of filming the 'Rap Sh!t' behind-the-scenes interviews, I feel a renewed commitment to striving for excellence in every frame I shoot.

Feel free to connect if you wish to explore more about my experiences or need insights into production techniques, equipment setups, or creative storytelling methods.

These projects both challenge and inspire me, and I am excited to see where the next adventure in cinematography takes me.
